CHAPTER VIII
«W hen happiness fills the heart, everything around you seems more beautiful». Or at least that is what Jane thought, because, since her meeting with Braxton at the dance, almost three months ago, every morning dawned with a more radiant sun.
Since then, her life had completely changed making her dream come true. It all started the morning after the dance. As soon as Betsy woke her up, she told her that there was a surprise waiting for her in the hall and, thinking that she knew what it was about, she arranged herself in a hurry and ran to look for it.
A magnificent bouquet of white roses and a small box containing her lost earring appeared in front of her, together with a small card where the count communicated his intention to visit her at tea time. The rest of the day she was pacing impatiently in front of the cuckoo clock, even being unable to eat a single bite until Lord Brandbury knocked on the door at the appointed time.
Since then, the count visited her frequently and every morning he sent her a bouquet of white roses with a poem and an invitation. They strolled through the park, went to concerts, drank tea in refined halls and appeared in poetry recitals holding hands. Any excuse was good for Lord Brandbury to claim Jane's company, and for her to agree willingly to each invitation.
In fact, her clear preference towards the count was such that all of London began to assume that the gentleman would end up being her husband. As a result of these murmurings, the number of her suitors eventually decreased, as they were displaced by the new candidate. Something that undoubtedly favoured Braxton, because he thought he was already winning the prize and he had the girl saying `yes I do´.
Gossip increased when they were seen with regularity walking in the park, because their aim was to be seen in public and to make their intentions known to everybody. In addition, as they were following the rules of courtship, keeping the distances of courtesy and accompanied by carbines that preserved their virtue, people soon gossiped about the interest of Lord Brandbury for that lady and began to murmur about the reasons for this distinction.
Of course, the legacy and beauty of the young lady were the main points of discussion, and everybody praised the choice of the lord and the luck of finding his affection reciprocated. No one criticized him or questioned his intentions, nor the advantageous union between the daughter of a simple baronet and a long-line earl.
When their walks were more frequent and the count asked her to inaugurate the dance, on three different occasions, all the midwives began to speculate and came to the conclusion that the gentleman was formally courting Miss Grayson, so they expected that the marriage proposal would come soon. The problem was that time passed and this request did not come.
And so, in less than three months, the Earl of Brandbury
